New England Yacht Charter
Seafaring has long been a way of life in New England, from the 18th-century whaling ships that set out from Nantucket and other northern ports, to the lobstermen who still ply the region’s rocky shores. This is also one of America’s favorite playgrounds for sailors, spawning generations of racing champions, as well as countless yachters who return each summer to enjoy New England’s quaint ports and quiet coves.

Newport

Most yacht charter itineraries begin and end in Newport, R.I., the “Yachting Capital of the Northeast.” You may want to arrive a few days before your Newport yacht charter is scheduled to depart so that you can explore this bustling port, which was home to the America’s Cup races for decades in the 20th Century. Today, in addition to a bustling waterfront lined with shops and bistros, Newport’s chief attractions are its huge, Gilded Era mansions, which have been carefully preserved and are open for viewing.

Picturesque Islands

Must-see stops on your route are Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket – although visitors typically favor one over the other. These islands with their shingled cottages overgrown by roses are among the most picturesque destinations in America. Although they are often thronged with tourists in the summer months, it is nearly always possible to find a deserted spot to sunbathe on one of their surf-swept ocean beaches—particularly when you have the yacht’s tender at your disposal. In the afternoon, it’s time to stroll the cobblestone streets, shop in the eclectic boutiques, and sample homemade ice cream by the docks. Later, you can go in search of the thickest clam chowder, followed by mouthwatering lobster in one of the many quintessentially New England eateries.

Maine

Another spectacular charter destination to visit either at a separate time or as part of a longer itinerary is the “rockbound coast of Maine.” While its waterfront towns, such as Portland and Bar Harbor, offer more cosmopolitan pursuits, much of Maine’s coastline and the tree-lined islands that dot it are still relatively wild; perfect for gunkholing, hiking, and watching the lobstermen at work. Penobscot Bay, Eggemoggin Reach, Mount Desert Island…these are names that stir the sailor’s soul.
