New Zealand Yacht Charter
Aotearoa, or “The Land of the Long White Cloud,” is what the native Maori called New Zealand, but you are much more apt to find sunshine and sparkling seas on your charter, especially in the summer months of December through February. Shorts and swimsuits are acceptable attire for the holidays here. During the Pacific’s southern summer cyclone season, New Zealand is out of harm’s way, and with 11,000 miles of pristine coastline, sheltered bays, and abundant marine life, it offers something for everyone, particularly the adventurous at heart. New Zealand has two main landmasses, the North and South Island, and numerous smaller isles. Each has its own particular charms.

Auckland

While there are many cruising grounds to choose from, one of the most popular is the Hauraki Gulf, close to the city of Auckland on the North Island. The former home of the America’s Cup races, this is one of the sailing capitals of the world. Auckland and environs also enjoy the best weather in New Zealand.

Maori Culture

Start your trip exploring this bright and friendly city, which offers contemporary pleasures and also a peek at the Maori civilization that came before. Don’t miss the daily Maori cultural performance at the Auckland Museum. Once you leave port, your yacht will take you through the Hauraki Gulf, which combines populated suburban islands with natural conservation areas. Spend afternoons in a quiet anchorage contemplating the dramatic volcanic peak of Rangitoto, or sipping Sauvignon Blanc on vineyard-dotted Waiheke.

North Islands

At the tip of the North Island lies another beautiful cruising area, the Bay of Islands. These cruising grounds are known for their scuba diving sites, including shipwrecks, caves and rocky bottoms.

Wildlife

Snorkeling and swimming off the pristine white-sand beaches are also popular pastimes here, along with hiking on the many walking trails. Look for dolphin and even blue penguins as you cruise through these magical isles.

South Islands

But that’s not all New Zealand has to offer. Adventurous travelers may want to head to the quieter South Island with its dramatic landscapes, including soaring peaks and deep fjords. A sportsman’s paradise, this is the place to find bungee jumping, jet-boat adventures and much, much more.
