HISTORY

The Whitsunday Islands have an interesting history that began with their formation due to volcanic activity 30-50,000 years ago. Anchor inside Nara Inlet, and climb the track to a viewing platform, where you’ll find a cave’s entrance. Inside the cave, you’ll get to view captivating Ngaro rock art, which dates back 9,000 years ago. On a guided tour, you’ll learn about the stories behind the art and the history of the Ngaro people. This site is one of the oldest Indigenous sites on Australia’s eastern coast. Visit the Proserpine Historical Museum, which has won three Whitsunday Heritage and Cultural Tourism Awards. You’ll learn even more about the Aboriginals, as well as the history of gold mining and colonization in the region.
