HISTORY
The history of Australia dates back over 65,000 years, when Indigenous Australians first settled on the continent. For tens of thousands of years, these Indigenous peoples lived off the land, developing their own cultures, traditions, and languages. The first European contact with Australia occurred in 1606, when the Dutch explorer Willem Janszoon arrived on the western coast of Cape York Peninsula. In 1770, Captain James Cook claimed the eastern coast of Australia for Britain, leading to the establishment of a penal colony in 1788. Over the next century, more colonies were established, leading to the eventual federation of the six colonies in 1901 to form the Commonwealth of Australia. Since then, Australia has become a prosperous and diverse country, with a rich cultural heritage that includes Indigenous cultures, European influences, and more recent waves of migration from all over the world.
